UV Pipe Relining For Cracked Stormwater Pipes In Sydney’s North Shore

Cracked Stormwater Pipes In Roseville Were Repaired Using UV Pipe Relining Technology

Roseville, NSW | Duration: 1 Day

Project Brief

With the excessive wet weather we have been experiencing in Sydney this year, this client had the unfortunate experience of expensive flooding as a result of blocked drains during heavy rain.

Tree roots had infiltrated the pipework of their stormwater pipes, which were cracked or collapsing in many places. With more rain on the forecast, it was important to the client to have the pipe repaired before further damage could occur.

We worked with a local Roseville plumbing company to complete this job.

Our Approach

There were around fifty metres of 150mm and 225mm clay and concrete stormwater pipe that needed to be repaired with pipe relining.

We decided UV pipe relining would be the best solution for their stormwater pipes, due to the location of the pipes under a road, and the speed at which a solution was required to cure.

The Ready Set Reline team worked hard during prep, making sure everything would run as smoothly as possible during the reline. Then followed it up working closely together on site, managing the challenges of using new technology and completing the job on time and on budget.

High Pressure Water Jet Drain Cleaning & Robotic Junction Cutting

After the initial inspection, we used our robotic junction cutting technology to remove shar parts of cracked pipe and some aggressive tree roots. We then cleaned the line of debris with a high-pressure water jetter.

Prior to installing the new liner, we prepare the existing drain for optimal adhesion using our picote machine. This technology essentially provides a rough surface for the new liner to bond with.

UV Pipe Relining

After a final CCTV camera investigation to ensure the pipes were clear, we installed 50 metres of custom-fabricated fibreglass liner into the stormwater pipe, and used a new technique involving ultra violet light to cure the liner. This technique was successful, increasing the strength of the pipe and allowing us to finish onsite in half the time, using less water and with less waste.

Once the liner had cured using the UV light, we inserted the CCTV inspection camera back into the drain to check its integrity.

UV pipe relining for stormwater pipes on this Roseville project, and typically anywhere in Sydney’s North Shore, is a great solution due to a number of reasons.

The Major Obstacles That We Overcame

Due to the variances in size of the pipes, we needed to navigate some tricky dimensional changes and angles in the pipeline.

We also needed to make sure the liner being used to repair the pipes stayed clear of any sunlight to prevent it from curing. With the UV pipe relining technology, the liner needs to stay unexposed to any sunlight during prep and installation – which was certainly a challenge when the sun came out on the day we were meant to be installing! Fortunately our experienced team found ways to work with the conditions, completing the job on time.

What We Are Most Proud Of?

We succeeded in completing a large, domestic pipe reline in half the time of a standard reline. This meant less disruption for the residents living in the complex, and immediate peace of mind for the client the next time rain is in the forecast.

Using the ultra violet technology, we were also able to save thousands of litres of water that would have been used in the traditional method of relining. This, combined with no wastage from excess resin consumption, resulted in a lower environmental impact.

If We Could Start The Project From The Beginning, What Would We Have Done Differently?
To avoid any risk, ideally we would have preferred to complete a job using UV pipe relining on an overcast day.

Final Thoughts/Results

We want to say a big thanks to APS (Australian Pipe lining Solutions) for providing their high quality materials, expertise and ongoing customer support to help us pave the way for the future of pipe relining using UV technology.
