Cast Iron Sewer Pipe Relining

Relining Cast Iron Sewer Pipes In A Commercial Office Block Using UV Pipe Relining For Speedy Delivery

Sydney, New South Wales | Ready Set Reline

Project Brief

Ready Set Reline were contracted to repair leaking cast iron sewer pipes and sewer vent pipes within a commercial block. Being an ageing building in Sydney, the cast iron pipes had rusted and were emitting sewer odours to the many offices within the building. It was important to the client to resolve this issue quickly, while respecting the daily operations within the building that would still continue during the reline process.

Our Approach

Being a large building with many offices, it was important that the project was well managed and completed in a timely fashion. There were three fifty metre cast iron sewer stacks that needed to be relined, which serviced 10 floors of the building. The company opted for UV pipe relining because it could be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the workers in the building. Relining the cast iron piping (as opposed to replacing) meant that the company wouldn’t have to open up and repair walls, had they chosen to replace the sewer stack and vents.

Identifying The Problem Areas

This sewer stack relining job was completed in three days, over two weekends. In the first phase of the job, we inspected and cleaned the pipes outside of working hours. Using the incredibly strong chain picote machine, we cleaned the pipes and removed any broken pieces. Once we cleared the pipes, we checked all 150m with a CCTV drain camera to ensure there were no further blockages, or anything that could interfere with the pipe relining process. Finally, we measured the pipes one last time so that we could perfectly prepare the pipe relining material to fit the sewer pipes.

Relining and Repairs

On the day prior to the reline, we prepared the UV resin. UV pipe relining is a great option when work needs to be completed quickly. It also cures faster than other resins, meaning the services are reinstated faster, resulting in minimal disruption.

On Saturday (to not disrupt office work), we successfully relined all three cast iron sewer stacks and repaired the sewer vent pipes. This included cutting out ten junctions using robotic junction cutting.

The Major Obstacles That We Overcame

Since the site was a busy business during the week, we undertook the works on the weekend. This ensured minimal disruption to the building occupants and allowed us to complete the cast iron pipe reline as quickly as possible.

The majority of the work was indoors, so we hired an electronic air compressor to ensure the health and safety of our staff and anyone who might be in the building. Works that are completed outdoors can use a standard air compressor that runs on fuel, however to complete an indoor pipe relining project, we needed a compressor that did not emit fumes.

We also needed an electrician to run 3-phase power to the specific location to run the compressor before we started work.

Top Three Things We Are Most Proud Of

It was a great accomplishment to reline three-fifty metre cast iron sewer stacks with junction cutting in one day! Our team went the extra mile to get this job done on the weekend. They worked together and everything went smoothly.

We were grateful for the help from Fracks Air Compressors, who organised the essential internal air compressor that was needed for this job.
