What Goes Wrong With North Shore Drainage?
Nearly every drainage failure we see on the North Shore comes down to the same three things.
Old clay and earthenware pipe
Federation and interwar homes across the Lower North Shore still run on the original earthenware. Post-war brick houses through Roseville, Killara and Lindfield sit on 1950s clay. Both were laid in short lengths with mortared joints or rubber rings, and mortar does not survive seventy years underground.
Tree roots
The canopy that makes this part of Sydney worth living in is also what is breaking your drains. Moreton Bay figs, Jacaranda trees, brush box, liquidambars and turpentines all send roots metres down, and they find the damp air or sewer waste escaping a failed joint, work in through the gap, and then swell until the pipe splits. If your drain backs up every autumn and clears after a plumber visits, roots are the cause and jetting alone will not stop it coming back.
Ground movement
The North Shore sits on sandstone and shale. Ground shifts, pipe joints pull apart, and the misaligned section starts catching everything that passes through it.
What you notice first is usually a slow toilet, a gurgle in the shower when the washing machine drains, a patch of grass that stays green through summer, or a smell near the boundary. By the time it is a full blockage, the pipe has usually been failing for years.
The old fix was to dig it up. On a Ku-ring-gai or Willoughby block that means an excavator through the garden, sandstone paving lifted, a tree possibly lost, and weeks of reinstatement. Relining does the same repair without any of that.

What Pipe Relining Costs on the North Shore
